CHOTA 12/09/2015

Newton-le-Willows Amateur Radio Station has just returned from it’s very first Special Event Station.

The club ran GB3LI from Lowton Independent Methodist Church as part of CHOTA on 12/09/2015.

They arrived on sit at 08:30 and immediately set about setting up the station (after the obligatory cup of tea). Disaster struck when the home brew 2m antenna (ably constructed by Keith G1HIP some 30 years prior) snapped at the base due to old age. After a quick search for a possible solution it was suggested that we use a wooden walking stick! Alan Nixon G1EFU surrendered his walking stick to the cause, and so it was that Newton le Willows Amateur Radio Club hoisted a members walking stick into the air (see attached picture).

Conditions weren’t the best but our operators Chris (M0ZLK), Amanda (M6BWV) -HF Voice, Dave (M0NZR) – HF Data modes, and Alan G1EFU on 2M and 70cm voice did a sterling job and managed around 40 contacts.

They also took the opportunity to carry out some of the requirements of the Foundation Exam for new member Francis.

Several members of the public attended, including local Scout Megan, and local Amateurs Tony G7HOA and his son, Terry M0NTA along with his wife and grandson, and Keith M3LUE.

All members are looking forward to our next event which we are planning as a HF day by the beach in October.

The members would like to thank Lowton Independent Methodist Church for use of the Church.

Two new Annual Trophies!

NLWARC are pleased to announce two new trophies – both to be presented at the Christmas meal.

First of all is the Chairman’s Trophy – presented for the most contacts to to different countries (you may work the same country more than once, provided you use either a different mode or band).

The Chairman's Trophy

The competition runs from 00:01 on the 3rd September 2015, to 00:00 on the 24th November 2015 (future competitions will be from 00:01 on the 1st January to 00:00 the night before the last meeting in November.

Secondly will be the ‘Most Unusual Activation Trophy’. This will be awarded to the Amateur who in the opinion of the Vice Chair (the Vice Chair and their immediate family are excluded from this competition) has activated the most unusual place or setting. To qualify you must log at least three different contacts (any band / mode is acceptable), provide PHOTOGRAPHIC please keep them clean) proof of the location (as well as an EQSL log for the date in question). The days / times are exactly the same as for the Chairman’s Trophy.

Most Unusual Activation Trophy

Both trophies will need to be returned to the club on the last meeting in November. The trophies will be presented by the Chairman / Vice Chair for 2015, but in subsequent years the preceding years winner will have the honour of presenting the trophy.

For 2015, the ONLY permissible logging program will be EQSL, and you will need to provide proof that the contacts took place (contacts must be EQSL verified).

NLWARC Rallies

We are proposing two rallies (starting next year), one in the second week in May, and one in the second week in November.

We are looking to run the rallies on a Sunday, opening to traders from 8, and the public at 10 – we would close the rally at 3:30.

If you are interested in holding a stall, then please contact Chris M0ZLK (details on the contact page).

Christmas Meal

There will be a Christmas Meal this year for ALL members and their families. It will take place at the

on Tuesday 1st December. We are looking to get there around 18:00 (Chris says the sweets are cheaper then).

NLWARC back on air and back on the web!

NLWARC is starting again after a couple of years absence. The club decided to close its doors at its last location due to the inconvenient location and time that meetings where taking place. We are currently working on bringing the club back as weekly meeting club rather than the internet based club that it currently is.

Members have started to hold regular ‘Nets’ on Mondays and are looking to start digital mode nets in the near future. Members are also working on a new web site for the club.
